ESGI 196 at UBI: Mathematics Making an Impact on Industry

More than 20 students, researchers and lecturers came together at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) for the 196th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI), tackling three real-world challenges proposed by Transdev and Coficab.

Working in teams and over an intensive period of collaborative problem-solving, participants addressed three distinct industrial challenges: "Risk Modelling and Prediction in Public Transport", proposed by Transdev, "Stock Pair Planning" and "Electrical Resistance Model", both proposed by Coficab.

The outcomes were highly successful: every group was able to provide the respective company with concrete answers and valuable insights into the problem presented. The event once again highlighted the power of mathematical modelling as a bridge between academic expertise and real industrial challenges.

The success of the event was also strongly supported by its exemplary organisation. In particular, the careful selection of the problems ensured a valuable and non-trivial diversity of application areas, while the thorough pre-processing of the challenges provided participants with solid starting points while retaining their essential modelling difficulties. This preparation was fundamental to enabling the groups to progress as effectively as they did.
